Arde
2021—
My fist claws the mattress, violently, potent with desire. I wish this mattress was your body, those rock-hard arms, those hands, big enough to wrap around my neck while you have me. I am fire, and it is in me. Calm me down with your water, your humidity, your sweat and your spit, control this burning revolution in my stomach, turn me yours in the middle of the burnt woods, everything in ashes, my body still clamoring for more.
Arde is a photographic series made during the filming of João Pedro Rodrigues' film Fogo-Fátuo, which premiered in the Director's Fortnight of Cannes Film Festival, in 2022. Set mostly in a fire station, the series explores the fetishistic side of "the fireman," all while imbuing a deeply masculine environment with a queer gaze and eroticism. Arde is a play of words: the portuguese word means "burns" as in something burns, and also sounds like the english word "hard," giving it a double sense of burning desire, of fiery looks and hard bodies. The series, entirely made on medium format film, tells a loose story of sexual tension, desire, and the queer experience of an unintentionally camp setting.
